Configuring Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 for NTU Webmail Account
I’ve just realized that usually…
- I type webmail.ntu.edu.sg in my browser’s address box almost every x-hours, where x in Z+ and 0 < x < 24, followed by clicking the link given;
- I open my homepage and click Webmail;
- I type stuff\blablabla and my password to check my NTU e-mail;
- I am afraid of Microsoft stuff;
- I see broken incorrect layout of NTU Mail as I use a non-IE browser;
- when I use Internet Explorer, I must wait for about:blank for a century.
Boring, you see. Now I don’t want to open that website frequently at least in my laptop, even though at last I should be brave to use Microsoft stuff. The only way to check the e-mail without abusing web browser and typing that thingy is by abusing Microsoft Office Outlook.
The guide from NTU CITS does not seem to be straightly applicable to Outlook 2007 version, but it actually works anyway if you try for the whole night hahaha. [I hope CITS will update the guide soon.]
So, I try to explain the guide in terms of Outlook 2007 [ and Windows Vista Business; because I use that
].
Those who don’t want to run through this guide, try another simpler guide from NTU CITS. I don’t know whether it will work though. The guide states that it is for Outlook 200x, but the steps mentioned in the guide says that that the profile is for Outlook 98/2000.
- Open the Control Panel and switch to Classic View.

- Look for the
icon, and double-click it. - Click Show Profiles.

- Add new profile.

- Give the new profile a name. After that, click OK.

- Check the box Manually configure server settings or additional server types, then click Next.

- Choose Microsoft Exchange and click Next.

- Type Mail21 for Microsoft Exchange server;
Check the box below; and
Fill the User Name box with the NTU network user name.

- If you see some annoying pop-ups [saying that something fails or should be checked], don’t Cancel them! Instead, just Close them. [If you cancel them, they'll keep popping up.]
- Click More Settings…
- On the Connection tab, check the Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP box. Then click Exchange Proxy Settings…

- Fill webmail.ntu.edu.sg for URL for Exchange;
Check the box Only connect to…, then fill msstd:webmail.ntu.edu.sg;
Use NTLM Authentication;
Check On slow networks,… box;
[Let the rest setting to you;] and
Click OK.

- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Next and Finish.
- Last but not least, choose the profile that you want to use, then click Apply and then OK.

- Errr sorry. That wasn’t the last.
Launch the Outlook 2007. You should see a familiar pop-up prompting for your password.
Login Prompt
That’s all…
Hey. still not able to get it working on my laptop with the same combo as yours. Vista plus Outlook 2007. Everything set as planned. But not working. Could you post a screenshot of what the login dialog should state? eg.
Login: student/blahblah
Password: asdasdasd
not sure whether its supposed to be Mail21/blahblah instead.
I have added the login pop up screenshot. Hope it helps.
By the way, you should use backslash ( \ ), not slash ( / ).
So, instead of
student/blahblah
you should use
student\blahblah
Still not able man… Keeps giving me the error that y name’s not in the address book. Moreover, what’s stated is:
Connecting to Mail21
and not…
Connecting to MAIL24.student.main.ntu.edu.sg
Have observed that its a backslash. Might it be a router setting problem?
Thanks for pointing out.
I started over but everything didn’t work exactly like above. ^^;
I found that either Mail21 or Mail24 doesn’t matter. Later on it will be changed into mail24.student.main.ntu.edu.sg or so.
The domain (e.g. student, staff, etc.) doesn’t need to be included.
If you include the domain, the error that you told me will keep going [at least for my laptop].
Hey
Thank you so muchh for this
.. the CITS one didn’t work for me…
Even this didn’t work exactly like above, but I guess our laptops are very unique
Cheers
You’re welcome!
Errr… yeah I think so XD
hi, you should include that the vpn for ntu should be installed and connected before any of these is attempted. i was asking my friend about this and that is the key to all the errors!
That can be an alternative solution if the problem remains.
However, I don’t think VPN for NTU should be installed and connected. Until now I don’t have it in my laptop.
Thanks for your contribution, Jonathan
hmm.. that’s weird. maybe i’m on vista. r u on xp?
Errr… I use Windows Vista Business.
Hello,
Thanks for the article. Was trying to do this for the last couple of days, and the NTU CITS help didn’t quite work for me. Thanks!

For “Add New Email Account”
User name you type your email accnt (e.g. xman0001@ntu.edu.sg) and check name.
I ve tried and it works.
Happy trying
I do every step as shown. But when I open outlook-the last step to type password then there are error as follow:
Cannot open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your offline folder file.
Can you help me check it.
Furthermore when i change Microsoft Exchange server to Mail24 it keep saying that:
Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The file C:\\Users\skywalker\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook1.ost cannot be assessed. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange at least once before you can use your offline folder file.
Any thing wrong with that.
Thank
@Andy
Are there any errors before you get that error?
If yes, what are they?
Have you set the configured profile as the default? [step #15]
hi. i found your guide very helpful… but i cannot log onto my mail a/c using the outlook 2007… it says that
“the name cannot be matched to a name in the address list”
what does this mean??
can you help please? i dunno if it means the configuration is wrong on my part or what…
thanks.
omg, thanks alot for the guide!!!
happy alumni here.
I did it in half the steps you listed… connecting to NTU’s VPN helps loads.
Hi, I managed to set up the outlook with your guidance a few months back. However recently, I have problems loggin in. The prompt for password to log in keeps popping up a few seconds after I keyed in my password, and have to do it again and again, yet still unable to log in.
Can you please advise me on the possibilities and the way to solve this? I tried deleting the profile and set up all over again but the problem still persists. Hope to hear from you soon
Thanks!
I encountered the exact same prob Jin got around the 12jan09.
Any help from anyone would be very much appreciated.
@Jin & greggy
Perhaps you:
- haven’t changed your passwords for more than 180 days;
If so, you can change your password here.
- log in between 2:30am and 3:30am (Singapore time) on Monday
This site states, “E-mail services is not available every Monday between 2:30am and 3:30am (Singapore Time) for System Maintenance”
Avoid logging in during this period.
Hi,
Ive just changed the password but sadly it still doesnt work.
I can actually log in via my browser normally, but when its from outlook they keep asking for the password and refuses to log me in for the whole day yesterday and for the second half of today.
Ha…I tried to change the password too and similarly, it doesn’t work too. Same as greggy, I can log in via browser but not outlook.
Are there still other ways or methods to solve this?
Anyways, really thanks alot for your advice
Hi Jin, I found a solution which works for me on Outlook 2003.
Before you do this close your outlook and any sync with pda etc.
1. In the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type Mail21.
2. Select the check box next to Use Cached Exchange Mode.
3. In the User Name box, type your network account username. E.g #ANDREW LOW LI JIA#
4. Click More Settings.
Note At this stage, the client application attempts to resolve the username on the
Exchange server. If it appears to hang and then a dialog box pops-up to confirm your
username and mailbox. Click Cancel on this dialog box.
5. On the Connection tab, in the Exchange over the Internet pane, select the Connect to my
Exchange mailbox using HTTP check box.
6. Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.
7. On the Exchange Proxy Settings page, under Connections Settings, do the following steps:
8. Enter webmail.ntu.edu.sg in the Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for
Exchange box.
9. Select the Connect using SSL only check box.
10. Next, select the Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL check
box.
11. Enter msstd:webmail.ntu.edu.sg in the Principle name for proxy server box.
12. Select the check box next to On fast networks, connect to Exchange using HTTP first,
then connect using TCP/IP if you will be connecting you PC via a high speed internet
link. Make sure the box for the slow network is also checked.
13. Under the Proxy authentication settings section, in the Use this authentication when
connecting to my proxy server for Exchange, select Basic Authentication.
14. Click OK and close all other windows.
Hi Greggy,
What is the Microsoft Exchange Server box and the connection tab? Are you able to have the screenshots? I’m sorry for this as I am not very good with these IT stuff.
Btw I’m using outlook 2007. I’ve been trying to find solutions to it but to no avail. Hope you’re able to assist me in it
Thx Greggy!
Its actually on top already written by nmutiara. One of the difference is that for the username i did not put e.g tan0019 but instead put the full name ntu mail usually calls me by with the # symbol. e.g #Tan Tin Lan Andrew#
Hey thx, i have the same problem as Jin & greggy.
now it is working again.
I followed all your instructions but the popup windows always appears and keep asking for the password.
Hi all.. SOLUTION HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have experienced the same situation that it keeps asking for password although i typed in the correct password. Everything same as shown above except these below 3 changes:
1. Change to Exchange Server from Mail21 to MAIL24.student.main.ntu.edu.sg
2. In more settings, connection tab, exchange proxy settings,
Proxy authentication settings change to “Baisc Authentication”
3. Uncheck Principle name options
Cay say thanks to me..

It works, thank you every much
is it possible to create for Assoc as well???? Because I have already graduated from NTU.
@Dhiva
I haven’t tried setting for Assoc account. However, after I read
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/cits/e-mailandmessaging/e-mail/Pages/retainyoure-mail.aspx
and
http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/exchange/helpsheet/MHS%20Alumni%20Mailbox.pdf
I think the guide above may work with a few adjustments, like domain name (ASSOC, not STUDENT).
